SMIM15
Molecular classification
Integral membrane protein, small membrane protein, transmembrane protein

Overview

Small integral membrane protein 15 is a 74 amino acid transmembrane protein with one transmembrane domain, encoded by the SMIM15 gene located at 5q12.1. Expression of SMIM15 is ubiquitous but highest in the prostate. Its function is currently not well understood, but it is known to interact with PBX4, a transcription factor involved in development. Clinically, deletions affecting the SMIM15 locus are linked to mental retardation, ocular defects, and possibly influence on caries susceptibility. The protein undergoes several post-translational modifications including sumoylation, glycation, and phosphorylation, but its precise biological role and relevance as a drug target remain to be established[1].
