Overview

Small integral membrane protein 17 (SMIM17) is a protein encoded by the SMIM17 gene and is predicted to be an integral membrane protein of about 100–118 amino acids in length. The gene is poorly annotated, with limited functional or mechanistic data available. SMIM17 is distinctively expressed in the central nervous system, notably in inhibitory and excitatory neurons, bipolar cells, and astrocytes, with single-cell and bulk RNAseq data showing elevated expression in the brain. Expression clustering links SMIM17 to other genes involved in neuronal and synaptic function, suggesting a potential—but not yet experimentally demonstrated—role in neuronal signaling pathways. Protein-level evidence is sparse, and there is no established role as a therapeutic target, nor are there any known drug interactions, validated biological functions, or disease associations. Thus, SMIM17 remains a protein of unknown biological and clinical significance but may warrant future investigation in neuroscience contexts.
