Small integral membrane protein 18 (SMIM18)

Small integral membrane protein 18 (SMIM18) is a predicted small transmembrane protein, encoded as a protein-coding gene in humans and other vertebrates. It is predicted to localize to the membrane, likely as an integral membrane protein, but its exact function, expression patterns, and biological significance remain unknown. Unlike typical drug targets (receptors, enzymes, ion channels, etc.), there is currently no evidence that SMIM18 is directly involved in signal transduction, disease causation, or targeted by drugs. The only reported disease annotation is a tentative association with Waardenburg syndrome type 3, but this is not well supported or widely replicated in the scientific literature. No functional interactions, mechanisms of action, or known safety concerns have been described for SMIM18.
