Overview

Small integral membrane protein 43 (SMIM43) is a small transmembrane protein encoded by the SMIM43 (also known as TMEM155) gene, located on human chromosome 4. It is primarily expressed in the brain, placenta, and lymph nodes, and is highly conserved among placental mammals. Functionally, SMIM43 is required for mesendoderm differentiation and interacts with glucose transporters, thereby promoting glucose uptake to meet the energy needs during early embryonic development. Its structure includes a single transmembrane domain and predicted post-translational modifications, but its complete biological functions remain incompletely defined. No drugs are currently known to target SMIM43, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic target or receptor[1][2][3][8].
