Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide E (SNRPE) is a highly conserved RNA-binding protein, a core component of the U1, U2, U4, and U5 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) that form the essential building blocks of the spliceosome[2][4][5]. SNRPE plays a critical role in pre-mRNA splicing and 3' end processing of histone pre-mRNAs, and it participates in both major and minor (U12-type) spliceosomes[2][4]. In addition, SNRPE is a key structural and functional constituent of several snRNP complexes and, as part of the U7 snRNP, is involved in histone transcript maturation[3][4]. Disease-associated studies have implicated SNRPE in autoimmunity (notably systemic lupus erythematosus, where it serves as an autoantigen), some congenital disorders of hair development (like hypotrichosis), and cancer, particularly prostate cancer, where SNRPE expression promotes tumor cell proliferation by regulating androgen receptor expression[1][2]. While SNRPE is not currently a target of any approved drugs, its role in splicing and disease makes it a highly relevant protein for molecular biology, cancer biology, and immunology research[1][2][6].
