Overview

Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein U5 subunit 40 (SNRNP40; also known as WD repeat-containing protein 57 or WDR57) is a protein component of the U5 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) particle, which itself is a critical part of the spliceosome complex responsible for catalyzing intron removal from pre-messenger RNAs in eukaryotic cells. SNRNP40 contains WD repeat motifs that mediate protein–protein interactions, facilitating its role in the assembly and function of the U5 snRNP and, by extension, the spliceosome. While SNRNP40 is essential for proper splicing and RNA processing, it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, nor are there any approved drugs targeting this protein. However, components of the U5 snRNP complex (including proteins of similar or larger molecular weight) can be recognized by autoantibodies in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, highlighting its structural distinction and immunological relevance within the spliceosomal machinery.
