Overview

Small nuclear RNA-activating complex polypeptide 4 (SNAPC4) is the largest subunit of the small nuclear RNA-activating protein complex (SNAPc), a multi-protein transcription factor essential for the transcription of small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes by RNA polymerase II and RNA polymerase III. It contains a Myb-domain that mediates DNA binding to the promoter-proximal sequence element (PSE), facilitating the recruitment of the transcription machinery. SNAPC4, together with other SNAPc subunits, is required for proper assembly and function of the spliceosomal snRNPs, which are critical for pre-mRNA splicing. In model organisms, mutations in SNAPC4 can disrupt snRNA expression and lead to developmental abnormalities, such as loss of biliary epithelial cells in zebrafish. Human genetic studies link SNAPC4 to neurodevelopmental and cardiac disorders. It is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
