Overview

Small nucleolar RNA host gene 18 (SNHG18) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), also known as CTD-2001E22.2 and linc1290, which does not encode a protein but plays important regulatory roles in multiple biological processes and diseases. SNHG18 is primarily localized in the nucleus and modulates gene expression through interactions with proteins and RNAs. It has been shown to regulate cell proliferation, apoptosis, glycolysis, and differentiation in diverse cell types, including granulosa cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and glioma stem cells. In cancer, elevated SNHG18 promotes tumor growth, metastasis, and treatment resistance; in vascular biology, it supports smooth muscle cell contractile phenotype and suppresses injury-induced neointimal hyperplasia, in part by upregulating miR-22-3p biogenesis[1][2][3]. Downregulation of SNHG18 is associated with increased cell death and DNA damage during ovarian aging, and it acts as a biomarker in both cancer and reproductive contexts. While SNHG18 influences pathological and physiological processes, it is not a conventional therapeutic target like a receptor or enzyme but is of growing interest as a regulatory RNA and disease biomarker.
