Small nucleolar RNA SNORA71 (SNORA71)

Target
SNORA71
Molecular classification
Small nucleolar RNA, H/ACA-box snoRNA, Noncoding RNA
01

Overview

Small nucleolar RNA SNORA71 is a noncoding RNA found in eukaryotic cells, characterized by the H/ACA-box motif. It forms ribonucleoprotein complexes (snoRNPs) with proteins such as dyskerin, Gar1p, and Nop10p, and functions primarily to guide the chemical modification of specific uridines to pseudouridines on target RNAs, including ribosomal and spliceosomal RNAs[1]. The specific biological role of SNORA71 is not fully elucidated, but recent research shows that the SNORA71A isoform enhances the expression and stability of ROCK2 mRNA, thereby promoting metastasis and epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells, marking its significance in cancer progression[2]. SnoRNAs more broadly are essential for post‐transcriptional regulation and modification of cellular RNAs, affecting ribosome biogenesis and broader gene expression[3][5].

02

Mechanism of action

SNORA71A binds G3BP1, stabilizes ROCK2 mRNA, and promotes EMT and metastasis

03

Biological functions

Guide RNA for pseudouridylation (conversion of uridine to pseudouridine on target RNAs)RNA modification (especially ribosomal and spliceosomal RNA)May regulate mRNA stability and expression (as shown for SNORA71A in cancer cells)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (specifically promotes breast cancer metastasis by influencing EMT and cell proliferation via stabilization of ROCK2 mRNA)
05

Safety considerations

Not directly applicable, as there are no therapies targeting SNORA71, but broader concerns would involve unintended effects on global RNA modification and cell viability if snoRNA pathways were perturbed; snoRNAs are essential for cell function
06

Biomarkers

SNORA71A expression may serve as a biomarker for metastatic breast cancer, given its elevated levels in aggressive tumors
