Overview

Small nucleolar RNA SNORD14 (also known as U14 snoRNA) is a small non-coding RNA found in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells. It belongs to the C/D box snoRNA class, which is characterized by conserved sequence motifs (C box and D box). SNORD14 localizes in the nucleolus and is primarily responsible for guiding the site-specific 2′-O-methylation of ribosomal RNAs. It functions in conjunction with associated core proteins to stabilize rRNA structure and facilitate ribosome assembly. Although snoRNAs as a class have been increasingly implicated in broader biological functions (alternative splicing, ac4C modification, miRNA-like activity), SNORD14’s primary annotated molecular duty is modification and processing of rRNA[1][2][3]. Key structural and mechanistic notes: - SNORD14 contains sequence motifs needed for recognition and recruitment of methyltransferase protein fibrillarin and other C/D box snoRNP core proteins[1][2]. - The 2′-O-methylation mediated by SNORD14 and its protein partners increases the stability and spatial structure of rRNAs, protecting them from degradation and ensuring accurate ribosome biogenesis[1][2].
