Molecular classification
Small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA), Non-coding RNA, Box C/D snoRNA, Guide RNA

Overview

Small nucleolar RNA SNORD22 (also known as snoRNA U22 or U22) is a non-coding RNA belonging to the box C/D class of snoRNAs, primarily functioning as a guide for site-specific 2′-O-methylation of nucleotides within ribosomal RNA and possibly small nuclear RNA[2][1][3]. It is typically located in the nucleolus, the main site of snRNA and rRNA maturation, and is encoded within the introns of the U22 host gene in mammals[2]. Like other C/D box snoRNAs, SNORD22 contains characteristic sequence motifs (C box and D box), associates with ribonucleoprotein complexes including fibrillarin and other core proteins, and plays a crucial role in ribosome biogenesis and potentially regulation of alternative splicing, but it is not considered a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[2][5][1][4].

Biological functions

Guides 2′-O-methylation of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and possibly small nuclear RNA (snRNA)Involved in processing and maturation of precursor rRNARegulates gene expression, may participate in RNA splicing and alternative splicing

Disease associations

Evidence exists for altered expression of some snoRNAs in cancer, but a direct role of SNORD22/U22 is not established in the current literatureOther (implicated in ribosome biogenesis and possibly via its family in broad regulatory roles)
