Small nucleolar RNA SNORD36 (SNORD36)

SNORD36
Molecular classification
Small nucleolar RNA, Box C/D snoRNA, Non-coding RNA

Overview

Small nucleolar RNA SNORD36 (also known as snoRNA U36) is a non-coding RNA molecule located in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells, where it functions in the biogenesis and modification of other small nuclear RNAs. It is a member of the box C/D snoRNA family, characterized by conserved C and D box sequence motifs, and functions primarily as a guide RNA directing site-specific 2'-O-methylation of ribosomal RNA (rRNA), specifically targeting 18S and 28S rRNA. SNORD36 is encoded within the intron of the ribosomal protein L7a gene. While canonical roles of C/D box snoRNAs include rRNA modification and ribosome biogenesis, SNORD36 has not currently been identified as a therapeutic target nor directly implicated in specific diseases or targeted by known drugs[2][1][3][5].
