Small nucleolar RNA SNORD39 (also known as snoRNA U39, SNORD55, or U55) is a non-coding RNA molecule found in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells[2]. It belongs to the C/D box class of small nucleolar RNAs, which are characterized by conserved sequence motifs called the C box (UGAUGA) and the D box (CUGA)[2][1][3][4]. SNORD39 functions as a guide RNA: it directs site-specific 2'-O-methylation of substrate RNAs, particularly the 28S ribosomal RNA at position C2791[2]. C/D box snoRNAs like SNORD39 are essential components of small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complexes (snoRNPs), along with core proteins such as fibrillarin, Nop56, Nop58, and Snu13, and are primarily involved in post-transcriptional modification and maturation of rRNAs and sometimes small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs)[1][3][5]. While several snoRNAs have emerging connections to disease (particularly cancer), SNORD39 itself is primarily defined and studied for its canonical role in rRNA modification, and there is currently no evidence in major databases or recent literature to indicate it functions directly as a drug target, biomarker, or has direct disease associations[2][4].
