Overview

Small nucleolar RNA SNORD58 (also known as snoRNA U58, SNORD58A, SNORD58B, and LOC124903416) is a member of the non-coding RNA (ncRNA) family classified as a C/D box snoRNA. These molecules function in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells as guide RNAs, directing site-specific 2'-O-methylation of substrate ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) by base-pairing with complementary rRNA sequences and recruiting the methyltransferase fibrillarin within a small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complex[2][1][3][4][5][7]. SNORD58 is specifically predicted to guide methylation of the 28S rRNA on residue G4198 and exists in two nearly identical copies (SNORD58A and SNORD58B) encoded within introns of the ribosomal protein RPL17 gene in the human genome[2]. C/D box snoRNAs such as SNORD58 are essential for the proper maturation and function of ribosomes, but there are no documented direct drug interactions or established disease biomarker or therapeutic target roles for SNORD58 itself[2][3][7].
