Small nucleolar RNA SNORD79 (snoRNA U79, Z22) is a non-coding RNA from the C/D box class of snoRNAs involved in the modification of other non-coding RNAs within the nucleolus, particularly by guiding the 2'-O-methylation of specific rRNA residues such as A3809 in 28S rRNA. It is typically found within the intron 7 of the GAS5 gene in humans and also in mice. Like other C/D box snoRNAs, SNORD79 contains conserved sequence motifs (C box and D box) and participates in the formation of small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complexes, critical for ribosome RNA maturation and function. SNORD79 itself is not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and currently has no reported roles as a therapeutic target or clinically relevant biomarker, nor any known drug interactions. Broader research into snoRNAs suggests these molecules collectively may have more expansive roles in gene regulation and disease, particularly cancer, though specific disease roles for SNORD79 have not yet been identified.
