Pseudogenes typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events but acquire disabling mutations so they cannot produce functional proteins. While most pseudogenes have no direct biological function, a few can regulate their protein-coding counterparts or have rare roles at the RNA level, though there is no evidence that this is the case for ENSG00000234262. Researchers should exercise care not to confuse the SPRR3 pseudogene with the functional SPRR3 gene, which has recognized roles in keratinocyte biology and inflammatory processes.
