Small ribosomal subunit protein uS10 (RPS20) is an essential component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit, crucial for protein synthesis. It participates in ribosome assembly and mRNA decoding. uS10 plays a direct role in ribosome-associated quality control (RQC), where ubiquitination of lysine residues marks stalled ribosomes for degradation pathways. Disruptive mutations in RPS20 are associated with increased risk for hereditary colorectal carcinoma due to impaired quality control mechanisms.
