Small subunit processome component 20 homolog (UTP20) is a highly conserved, nucleolar protein and integral part of the small subunit (SSU) processome, which is a large ribonucleoprotein complex crucial for the early steps of eukaryotic ribosome biogenesis[1][5]. UTP20 is required for processing and maturation of the 18S rRNA and the assembly of the small ribosomal subunit[1][3]. The SSU processome includes UTP20 among more than 70 proteins and U3 small nucleolar RNA, acting as an architectural and scaffolding factor[1]. In humans, reduced levels of UTP20 have been linked to cancer metastasis, where it has been referred to as "down-regulated in metastasis" protein[2]. UTP20 does not fall into classic target categories such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel, and is not currently a recognized direct target for therapeutic drugs.
