Overview

SUMO1 pseudogene 1 (SUMO1P1, also known as SUMO5) is a human **pseudogene**, previously classified as a protein-coding gene in early literature, but not recognized as a canonical protein-coding gene in major databases. While SUMO5 in earlier studies was suggested to encode a functional small ubiquitin-like modifier in primates with some unique sumoylation events, later data and current genome curation agree it is a **non-functional pseudogene** in humans[3]. Its best-characterized protein-coding paralogs are SUMO1, SUMO2, and SUMO3, which encode proteins that post-translationally modify substrates, regulating transcription, cell cycle events, and nuclear body organization[2][4]. SUMO1P1 is not considered a therapeutic target, has no known directly associated drugs, and does not have independent biological or disease roles.
