Small Ubiquitin-Related Modifier Protein (SUMO)

Target
SUMO
Molecular classification
Ubiquitin-like modifier, Protein

Overview

Small ubiquitin-related modifier proteins (SUMOs) are a family of small proteins structurally similar to ubiquitin. They are covalently attached to lysine residues on target proteins in a process known as SUMOylation, which is a type of post-translational modification. SUMOylation regulates various cellular processes including nuclear-cytosolic transport, transcriptional regulation, DNA repair and replication, mitosis, apoptosis, and protein stability.
