Small vasohibin-binding protein (SVBP) is a protein that acts as an essential cofactor or chaperone for vasohibins (VASH1 and VASH2), enzymes that function as tubulin carboxypeptidases. SVBP itself does not display enzymatic activity but forms a stable heterodimeric complex with vasohibin to enhance their solubility, secretion, and enzymatic activity—most notably, the removal of the C-terminal tyrosine of α-tubulin (tubulin detyrosination)[1][2][3][5][6][7][8]. This post-translational modification of tubulin is critical for microtubule-related processes including mitotic spindle function, axon development, and neuron specification. Genetic defects in SVBP have been implicated in rare neurodevelopmental disorders, but SVBP is not generally considered a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme itself; instead, it is an obligate regulatory subunit within an enzyme complex[3][5]. There are currently no known drugs that directly target SVBP, nor is SVBP established as a therapeutic biomarker or associated with specific safety concerns.
