SMC2 antisense RNA 1 (SMC2-AS1)

Target
SMC2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA, antisense RNA, divergent transcript, non-protein coding transcript
01

Overview

SMC2-DT (SMC2 divergent transcript, also called SMC2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the reverse strand near the SMC2 gene locus. Such divergent antisense lncRNAs commonly function as regulators of their neighboring genes by recruiting chromatin-modifying complexes and possibly influencing histone modification status. Unlike its protein-coding counterpart SMC2, which is an essential condensin complex subunit involved in mitosis and chromosome condensation, SMC2-DT acts at the RNA level and primarily serves as a molecular scaffold within the nucleus, modulating gene expression by epigenetic mechanisms. There is no evidence or reports currently implicating SMC2-DT directly as a protein target in drug discovery or as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or classic therapeutic target.
