"Divergent transcription" refers to the widespread phenomenon in mammals where transcription initiates bidirectionally from gene promoters, producing both the main (sense) gene transcript and usually a noncoding, antisense RNA known as a divergent or upstream antisense transcript[4][5]. "SMG1 divergent transcript" most likely designates a long noncoding RNA transcribed in the opposite direction from the promoter of the SMG1 gene.
