Overview

SMG1 pseudogene 5 (SMG1P5) is a transcribed, unprocessed pseudogene located on chromosome 16p11.2[7]. It shares sequence homology with the protein-coding SMG1 gene, which encodes a kinase involved in the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway[3]. While the parental SMG1 gene functions in mRNA surveillance and cellular stress response, SMG1P5 itself does not encode a functional protein and is not a therapeutic target. As a pseudogene, SMG1P5 may have potential regulatory roles at the RNA level, such as acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) to sequester microRNAs or influence RNA-binding proteins, processes increasingly recognized for their impact on gene expression and disease susceptibility in some contexts[6]. However, there are no established roles for SMG1P5 in human disease, no known drug interactions, or use as a biomarker or therapeutic target.
