SMG7 antisense RNA 1 (SMG7-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA located near the SMG7 gene, notably within its second intron and transcribed antisense to SMG7[1][4]. It plays a regulatory role in the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway by influencing the expression of SMG7, a core NMD factor involved in degrading mRNAs containing premature stop codons[3][4]. SMG7-AS1 is implicated in immune system modulation and has been associated with autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, where its reduced expression correlates with decreased SMG7 levels and increased autoantibody production[2]. In cancer, SMG7-AS1 is upregulated in skin cutaneous melanoma, where its expression is linked to metastasis, immune infiltration, and possibly immunotherapeutic response[6]. There are no known drugs that directly target SMG7-AS1, and no specific safety concerns are reported in the context of therapeutic interventions.
