Smooth muscle cell contraction is a fundamental physiological process responsible for the movement and regulation of various organs and tissues, including blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, airways, and the urogenital system. Unlike skeletal or cardiac muscle, smooth muscle cells are non-striated and contract involuntarily in response to a variety of stimuli.
Various drugs target different steps in this pathway: - Calcium channel blockers reduce Ca2+ influx to relax vascular smooth muscles. - MLCK inhibitors prevent phosphorylation of myosin light chains. - Potassium channel activators such as TREK‑1 openers hyperpolarize membranes to inhibit contraction at the level of smooth muscle itself rather than via neuronal input.
