Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are specialized, spindle-shaped cells found in the walls of hollow organs, including blood vessels, intestines, bladder, and uterus. They are responsible for involuntary movements, such as peristalsis, and regulate vascular tone. SMC replacement aims to regenerate or replenish these cells in tissues where they have been lost or damaged due to disease. Pericytes serve as a primary source for regeneration, differentiating into new SMCs after injury. While promising for regenerative medicine, challenges remain regarding the specificity of targeting and ensuring proper functional integration within host tissues.
