The smooth muscle contraction pathway is a fundamental physiological process responsible for the contraction of smooth muscle cells found in various organs such as blood vessels, airways, the gastrointestinal tract, and the urogenital system. It involves a cascade of events starting with calcium influx, activation of calmodulin, phosphorylation of myosin light chains by MLCK, and ultimately, crossbridge cycling between actin and myosin filaments. Relaxation occurs through dephosphorylation of myosin light chains by myosin phosphatase. This pathway is regulated by neural, hormonal, mechanical, and local chemical signals.
