SMS pseudogene 1 (SMSP1)

Target
SMSP1
Molecular classification
Pseudogene

Overview

SMS pseudogene 1 (SMSP1) is a genomic sequence related to the Spermine synthase (SMS) gene but has been rendered non-coding by mutations or regulatory loss. Pseudogenes such as SMSP1 do not produce a functional protein and are typically regarded as non-functional genetic elements. However, some pseudogenes can exert regulatory effects on their parent genes—such as altering mRNA stability, acting as competing endogenous RNAs, or contributing to genetic diversity through recombinational events. To date, there is no evidence that SMSP1 has a direct role in disease, functions as a therapeutic target, or is associated with recognized biomarkers or interacting drugs.

02

Mechanism of action

None applicable for drugs; pseudogenes are not protein targets but may impact disease indirectly via gene regulation

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression via miRNA competitionGeneration of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that regulate nearby genesPotential recombination with parental gene leading to genetic diversity
04

Disease associations

No direct disease roles attributed to SMSP1
