Overview

SMYD3 antisense RNA 1 (SMYD3-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the SMYD3 gene. It is classified as an lncRNA, not a protein-coding gene. Preliminary data suggest SMYD3-AS1 may regulate expression of the nearby SMYD3 locus, a gene important in epigenetic control and carcinogenesis, possibly through transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms. While SMYD3 (the protein) is a validated oncogenic histone methyltransferase and a classical therapeutic target, SMYD3-AS1 itself is an emerging regulator in the non-coding RNA regulatory network and is not (as of current evidence) considered a standard therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[4]. Its main recognized role is the regulation of SMYD3 gene expression and, by extension, cancer pathway modulation. There is no evidence of clinically approved drugs or direct inhibitors targeting SMYD3-AS1 itself, but modulation of such lncRNAs is an emerging area of research for cancer therapy and biomarker development[4].
