Overview

SNAI3 antisense RNA 1 (SNAI3-AS1) is a human long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) encoded by the SNAI3-AS1 gene. Unlike protein-coding genes, SNAI3-AS1 acts at the RNA level and does not produce a protein product[9]. Mechanistically, it functions as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA): it sequesters specific microRNAs (notably miR-27a-3p and miR-34a-5p), which in turn releases the inhibition on their mRNA targets—most notably, the oncogene PEG10—thus activating signaling pathways critical for cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma[2][4][6][8][10]. SNAI3-AS1 is markedly upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma compared to normal tissue, and high levels correlate with increased tumor aggressiveness and poorer overall patient survival[4][6]. Although SNAI3-AS1 is a clear regulator of tumorigenic biological processes, it is not conventionally labeled as a druggable "target" (like receptors or enzymes), and no therapies currently act on SNAI3-AS1 directly; its primary use in the clinic may be as a biomarker rather than a therapeutic target[2][4][6][9][10].
