01

Overview

Snake venom toxin is a complex mixture of biologically active molecules secreted by specialized glands in snakes, primarily used for prey immobilization, digestion, and defense. The venom contains a variety of proteins, peptides, and enzymes, including phospholipases A2, metalloproteinases, serine proteases, three-finger toxins, and cytotoxins. These toxins act through various mechanisms, including neurotoxicity, hemotoxicity, and cytotoxicity, leading to paralysis, hemorrhage, tissue necrosis, and potentially death. Some venom components have been developed as pharmacological tools and drugs, such as anticoagulants, antihypertensives, and analgesics.
