Overview

"Social connection enhancement" is not the name of a specific molecule, receptor, or druggable biological target. Rather, it is a descriptive outcome or goal referring to the augmentation of interpersonal connection, trust, empathy, and social bonding. In biomedical and neuroscience research, social connection is considered a critical factor in health and well-being[7][9], but it is not itself a molecular entity. There are molecular systems and receptors involved in facilitating social connection, most notably oxytocin and its receptor, as well as dopamine pathways[2][3][4][6][8][10]. Oxytocin, often called the "love hormone", is the most well-studied molecular target involved in social bonding, trust, and affiliative behaviors, but "social connection enhancement" does not refer to any one protein, gene, or receptor—it is instead a higher-order behavioral and psychological construct[1][2][4]. Attempts to enhance social connection pharmacologically typically target the oxytocin system or related neurochemical pathways, but the phrase as presented cannot be mapped to a specific canonical biological target[2][4][6][8][10].
