SOD2 overlapping transcript 1 (SOD2-OT1) is a long non-coding RNA gene that overlaps the coding region of the *SOD2* gene on chromosome 6. Unlike the SOD2 protein, which is a mitochondrial manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase and a key antioxidant enzyme, SOD2-OT1 does not code for a protein, receptor, transporter, or enzyme. Its biological role is currently undefined, although its location suggests a possible regulatory influence on SOD2 gene expression. It has no established use as a therapeutic target or biomarker, and its role in disease is unclear[5][7]. The name "SOD2, Superoxide dismutase [Mn], mitochondrial, SOD2-OT1" incorrectly combines the enzyme and the transcript; these are distinct molecular entities.
