Sodium–Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2)

Target
SGLT2
Molecular classification
Solute carrier family, Sodium-glucose cotransporters, Transporter
01

Overview

The sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) is a membrane protein primarily responsible for the reabsorption of glucose from the glomerular filtrate in the kidneys. It is a therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure. Inhibition of SGLT2 leads to increased urinary excretion of glucose and sodium, providing therapeutic benefits.

Other names
SLC5A2Solute carrier family 5 member 2
02

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of SGLT2 promotes urinary excretion of glucose and sodium, leading to reduced blood glucose levels, weight loss, and blood pressure reduction. May also have effects on adipose tissue lipolysis and gut microbiome composition.
