Overview

The sodium- and chloride-dependent betaine transporter (BGT-1, encoded by the SLC6A12 gene) is a membrane transporter protein that mediates the uptake of betaine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into cells in a process that depends on sodium and chloride ion gradients. It is mainly expressed in the liver, kidney, and, to a lesser extent, the brain. In the kidney and liver, it is involved in osmoregulation by transporting betaine (an important osmolyte) to help regulate cell volume under hyperosmotic stress. In the brain, it plays a minor role in regulating GABAergic neurotransmission, as its GABA affinity and expression are much lower than the major GABA transporters. Mutations or dysregulation of SLC6A12 may contribute to rare neurological or osmoregulatory disorders. No targeted pharmacological agents are clinically approved for this transporter, but it may serve as a research target in the contexts of osmoprotection and neurotransmitter modulation
