Sodium- and chloride-dependent GABA transporter 1 (GAT1)

Target
GAT1
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier Family 6 (SLC6)
01

Overview

Sodium- and chloride-dependent GABA transporter 1 (GAT1) is a membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It mediates transport of GABA together with sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions, removing GABA from the synaptic cleft by shuttling it into presynaptic neurons or astrocytes. This process is essential for terminating synaptic transmission and recycling neurotransmitter. Disruption or dysfunction in SLC6A1/GAT1 activity has been implicated in neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
