Sodium acetate (NaOAc)

Target
NaOAc
Molecular classification
Electrolyte, Alkalinizing agent, Organic salt
01

Overview

Sodium acetate is a chemical compound that functions as an electrolyte replenisher and a systemic alkalinizing agent rather than a biological target. It is commonly utilized in intravenous fluids and total parenteral nutrition to provide sodium and to correct metabolic acidosis. The acetate ion within the compound is metabolically converted into bicarbonate in the body, which helps neutralize excess hydrogen ions (PubChem CID 517045). Because it is a small molecule salt and not a protein-based receptor, enzyme, or transporter, it does not fit the traditional definition of a therapeutic target (DrugBank DB09395). Clinically, it is used to manage conditions like hyponatremia and to buffer acidic states in patients with renal impairment or other metabolic disturbances (StatPearls). Monitoring of serum electrolytes and acid-base balance is essential during administration to prevent adverse effects like hypernatremia or edema.
