Sodium ion homeostasis refers to the tightly regulated process by which the body maintains stable concentrations of sodium ions (Na⁺), primarily in extracellular fluid. This balance is essential for critical physiological functions, including fluid balance, blood pressure regulation, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle contraction. The kidneys are central to sodium homeostasis, regulating sodium reabsorption and excretion based on hormonal signals. The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) are key hormonal regulators. Dysregulation can lead to hyponatremia or hypernatremia, both with potential neurological consequences.
