The sodium bile acid cotransporters, including NTCP (SLC10A1) and ASBT (SLC10A2), are membrane transport proteins mediating sodium-dependent uptake of bile acids. NTCP, primarily in hepatocytes, facilitates hepatic uptake of bile acids from portal blood. ASBT, in ileal enterocytes, is responsible for reabsorption of intestinal bile acids, contributing to enterohepatic circulation and bile acid homeostasis. They are therapeutic targets for conditions like liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome and NASH. NTCP is the receptor for HBV entry into cells.
