Sodium Channel Protein (NaCh)

Target
NaCh
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated ion channel
01

Overview

Sodium channel proteins are integral membrane proteins that form ion channels, specifically conducting sodium ions (Na⁺) through the cell membrane. They play a critical role in generating and propagating action potentials in excitable cells such as neurons, muscle cells, and cardiomyocytes. The most well-studied class is the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC), which opens in response to changes in membrane potential. They are targets for various drugs, and mutations can lead to sodium channelopathies.
