The sodium channel protein epithelial subunit alpha, encoded by the SCNN1A gene, is one of the three essential pore-forming subunits (alpha, beta, gamma) that make up the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). ENaC is a non-voltage-gated, amiloride-sensitive ion channel located on the apical surface of epithelial cells in various tissues such as kidney, lung, colon, and sweat glands. The primary function of ENaC is to mediate sodium reabsorption across high-resistance epithelia and thus regulate body salt and water homeostasis.
