Sodium Channel Protein Type 10 Subunit Alpha (SCN10A)

Target
SCN10A
Molecular classification
Voltage-gated sodium channel, Ion channel
01

Overview

Sodium channel protein type 10 subunit alpha, also known as SCN10A or Nav1.8, is a voltage-gated sodium channel alpha subunit primarily expressed in peripheral neurons. It forms the pore of the sodium channel and is essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials in excitable cells such as nerve and muscle cells. Mutations or polymorphisms in SCN10A have been linked to several conditions including Small Fiber Neuropathy, Cardiac Arrhythmias, Episodic Pain Syndrome, and Peripheral Neuropathy. SCN10A/NaV1.8 is an active target for drug development aimed at treating chronic pain syndromes and certain cardiac arrhythmias due to its central role in neuronal excitability and signal conduction.
