Sodium Channel Protein Type 7 Subunit Alpha (Nav1.7)

Target
Nav1.7
Molecular classification
Voltage-gated sodium channel, Ion channel
01

Overview

Nav1.7, also known as sodium channel protein type 7 subunit alpha, is a voltage-gated sodium channel primarily expressed in peripheral neurons, especially at the endings of pain-sensing nerves called nociceptors. It is encoded by the SCN9A gene and plays a critical role in generating and conducting action potentials in excitable cells, particularly sensory neurons involved in pain perception. Mutations in SCN9A can cause severe pain syndromes or congenital insensitivity to pain, making Nav1.7 a target for analgesic drug development.
