Target intelligence / Profile preview
Sodium channel protein type 8 subunit alpha (Nav1.6) is the pore-forming alpha subunit of a voltage-gated sodium channel complex, encoded by the SCN8A gene. It is essential for initiating and propagating action potentials in neurons, especially at nodes of Ranvier where it enables rapid saltatory conduction. Mutations in SCN8A are associated with severe neurological disorders, particularly epileptic encephalopathy, characterized by early-onset seizures and intellectual disability due to altered channel gating properties.
