The sodium channel protein type II alpha subunit (SCN2A or Nav1.2) is a voltage-gated sodium channel alpha subunit predominantly expressed in the human brain. It plays a critical role in the initiation and propagation of action potentials in neurons by mediating voltage-dependent sodium ion permeability across excitable membranes. Mutations or dysfunctions of this gene/protein are associated with several neurological disorders, including epilepsy/seizure disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and infantile spasms.
