Target intelligence / Profile preview
The pore-forming, principal component of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), essential for action potential initiation and propagation in excitable cells. The alpha subunit alone forms a functional sodium channel that conducts Na⁺ ions in response to changes in membrane potential. Multiple isoforms exist (Nav1.1-Nav1.9), encoded by different genes (SCN1A-SCN11A), with tissue-specific expression and unique physiological roles. Mutations in SCN genes are linked to various neurological, cardiac, and pain disorders.
