Overview

The sodium channel protein type V alpha subunit (NaV1.5) is a voltage-gated sodium channel primarily expressed in cardiac muscle. Encoded by the SCN5A gene, it mediates the fast influx of sodium ions during the depolarization phase of cardiac action potentials, crucial for impulse propagation and heart muscle contraction. Mutations in SCN5A are associated with inherited arrhythmia syndromes like Long QT syndrome type 3 and Brugada syndrome. Aberrant expression has also been linked to certain cancers.
