Target intelligence / Profile preview

Sodium channel protein type 5 subunit alpha (NaV1.5)

Target
NaV1.5
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated sodium channel
01

Overview

Sodium channel protein type 5 subunit alpha (NaV1.5) is the pore-forming α-subunit of the voltage-gated sodium channel predominantly expressed in cardiac muscle cells. It mediates the rapid influx of sodium ions (Na+) during phase 0 of the cardiac action potential, which is responsible for the fast depolarization and propagation of electrical impulses throughout heart tissue. Mutations in SCN5A are associated with several inherited arrhythmia syndromes.
