The sodium channel protein type VIII alpha subunit, also known as Nav1.6, is a voltage-gated sodium channel encoded by the SCN8A gene. It forms the ion-conducting pore of the channel and plays a critical role in generating and propagating action potentials in neurons, particularly at nodes of Ranvier. Mutations in SCN8A are associated with various neurological disorders, including epileptic encephalopathy, intellectual disability, and movement disorders.
